Shangri-La

Yunnan, China (2010)

Shangri-La, Yunnan is the “Eden in dream” described by James Hilton in the 1937 book, Lost Horizon. In the Autumn of 2010, I traveled at the foothills of the Himalayas and stayed in Shangri-La, at an altitude of 3,100m (10,300ft). Where I experienced a terrible headache and for the first time, three straight nights of delirium from lack of oxygen. I acclimatized on the 3rd day and on the last day I stayed with local Tibetan family. I reached up to about 4,449m above sea-level with portable oxygen. It terrified me because as a person with rhenitis thin air could kill me instantly. But I survive and it was amazing journey.
